Press Release – Michigan State University Teams up with Michigan Children’s Trust Fund

Michigan State University has teamed up with the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund to create a conference called “Consumer Culture and the Ethical Treatment of Children.” Michigan State’s Department of Advertising, Public Relations & Retailing, Prevent Child Abuse America, and Michigan Children’s Trust Fund are sponsoring this event. This conference joins all of these organizations and scholars to share their ideas and opinions on how to help children in Michigan.

As part of the conference scholars are invited to submit research papers or other papers on the topics to be discussed at the conference. The papers will be blind judged and the best papers will be selected to be presented as part of the conference.

Another part of the conference is the keynote speaker, Lawrence Kutner. He has received the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in Media Psychology. His field of research helps people to understand how media is changing the country and what the effects are on children.

Through the conference the conference co-chairs are hoping to explore how media is affecting the nations children and how they can help prevent child abuse and neglect with the tools they already have.

The conference will be held on November 12 and 13 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Michigan State University.

Your never to old to learn

Have you ever thought you were too old to learn something new? Have you ever wanted to learn more about the Internet but didnt think it was for you? Do you think college students are the only ones who can be savvy on the Internet?

If you thought any of these things you are wrong. Michigan State Unversity has teamed up with Walsh College and brought a new and exciting class to help people of all ages brush up on their Social Marketing Tools. Students range from college students learning how to market themselves better to potential employers all the way to MSU professors trying to learn new skills to help their students suceed during and after college.

The class is called New Media Drivers License. Students learn how to use Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn …just to name a few. Even students who are past college age and are already in the work force can utalize the skills they learn to advance their careers and become more current in the technological age we live in.

I would suggest this class to students of all ages. Especially students who are above college age and are looking for ways to stay current wtih clients.

Search Engine Optimization

It is same to say just about everyone knows what google is. (www.google.com) Google is one of the most important search engine sights on the Internet. For the average consume Google is a very helpful tool. However, for a small company trying to market themselves on Google it can get very frustrating. It is hard to make your company stand out amoung the other millions of people on the search engine trying to make their company be on top.

There are some really great tools that can help a company market themselves well on search engines and help grow their company. One of the great tools I researched actually had some tools you could use for free. These tools are located at seomoz.org One of my favorite tools was called “Term Target.” It is used to help you buy the right words to help searchers find your company at the correct times.

The next tool I checked out was called Google Webmaster. http://www.google.com/webmasters/ One of the options is a Google Webmaster Tools. It has the tools that help webmasters drive traffic to their websites. There are other gadgets that you can use to help improve your website. Including an option that helps you analyze who is visiting your website. There is also a connect to help you start your google adwords campaign. ( See post titled Google Ad Campaign)

Social Networking

Social networking…there are so many ways to connect with different people. Staying connected is easier than it has ever been.

One of the most popular ways for people to stay in touch is through Facebook. Facebook started to become popular with the college crowd and has blossomed into a large social network. I use Facebook to stay in touch with high school friends and keep updated with my college friends. It is easy to share photos and update friends on what is going on in your friends lives. I dont see Facebook as a way to keep in touch with friends. However, it is hard to see it as a way to stay connected with collegues from work. Facebook is mostly social. Yes it is a good way to stay connected but it is hard to see it as a professional marketing tool. There has been a problem with employeers using Facebook as a tool to check in on their employees. Twitter is another way for people to stay in touch and connect through social networks. Twitter is a network where you can use your real name or come up with an user name. You can post your picture and customize your profile to your specific tastes. Twitter allows you to follow people and keep up with what they are doing. It also allows people to follow you and keep tabs on what you are up too. People can see what blogs you are interested in and allow people to post suggestions about what they want you to see or read. One thing I found with Twitter is that you dont have much of a profile. People need to get to know you through the blogs and postings you are interested in. The final social networking tool I checked out was LinkedIn. Of the three networks LinkedIn was the one of the three that is all about networking through your colleges. There was alot of information to fill in on the profile. It was a little confusing. There was a lot of information everywhere. However, it was a good tool because you can find people you need for work and they can find you. You can also narrow your search and find exactly what your looking for. Google Ad Campaign

The Google Ad campaign is a very different feature. It takes a while to get used too. At first it is a little confusing even when you are using the Starter version. One of the problems that I ran into with Google Ads is in the wording of my ad. I kept using explanation points and other various forms of punctuation and it the spell checker was not responding to the punctuation correctly. I also tried using all capital letters in one line of my ad and it also wouldnt let me do that. Google Ads can be very effective. However, there is no way to help brand yourself through them. They all look the same and there is no way for you to stand out and grab your consumers attention unless you are the first ad that pops up. If there is a highly concentrated market and you are trying to advertise it will take you a long time to reach the top of the list.

I did think that Google Ads did do some things right. They do allow you to have a very narrow target market for your ads. Depending on what product or service you are selling it is important to know the size of your target market. It also seemed that if you needed help Google did have services in place that could help you with your ad campaign.

It was also really great how they set up the spreadsheet so you could track the results of your campaign. Keeping track of your campaign is very important. Especially when you are choosing the words that come out of your search. This was another feature that I like about Google Ads. You could chose your key words.

Google Blog Search

Google Blog Search is something new I learned about. I didnt even know it existed. The search bar is very important because it helps you find exactly what kind of blog you are looking for.

I chose to search the Google Blog Search for digital marketing. Alot of different information came up on the topic. One of the blogs that I found interesting was titled “Can digital marketing save retail?” http://www.dmnews.com/Can-digital-marketing-save-retail/article/123849/

With the economy retail has been struggling to put up the numbers that they used too on their profit statements. There has been alot of information in the news about the economy and retail has been hit extremely hard. Everyone is looking for new ways to market themselves and their product, while still saving as much money as possible. The blog posting shows that many people are shopping online to save money. Online shopping is a great way for smaller companies to find customers without a big budget. The blogger also talks about how alot of different stores are giving customers large deals right now.

The blogger also tells the reader how digital marketing is increasing online and stores are sending out alot of different emails to help promote to customers. Digital marketing is increasing largly year after year and is the next up and coming important factor in marketing.

Researching Google

The google application that I chose to research was the Google Calendar. I chose this because I thought it would be most beneficial/applicable to my life. Something I learned that you could do that I found interesting and very helpful was that if you add in an event to the calendar and it going to occur at the same time on a daily or semi-daily basis you can click a button and it puts it in for you. http://www.google.com/calendar/render?hl=en&gsessionid=dWFz3nqWkPppNoLKvcpVeAThat is a very helpful tool. The more time saving it is when you are adding things into your calendar the easier.

I liked the Google Calendar. It was very beneficial and I could probably use it. I didn’t really like that you cant see all of your events for a whole month at one time. If I put in alot of events in one day it was hard to be able to see all of them. Another one of things I liked was that you can make your calendar public. I wouldnt want to do this for my personal calendar but it might be helpful if I was using a calendar for work purposes.

As of right now. ..I dont think that I would use this application after this assignment. However, when I start working in “real world” I might use it more in order to organize my meetings and other important things.

After going through some of the other Google Applications I found them to be extrememly user friendly. I dont think alot of people know about all the features that Google offers.

It was very interesting when I Googled Google. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&fkt=2283&fsdt=3204&q=Google&aq=f&oq=Every type of Google feature came up. It is a good way to find Google Applications if you are not sure about one of them. It is hard to imagine that Google could become such an empire. When Google first came out I never would have thought that it would have so many features like it does now.

Griffins Lose to Manitoba Moose

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Jason Krog tallied a hat trick and an assist on Friday to pace the Manitoba Moose to a 6-4 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena.

The Moose rode four unanswered first-period goals to a victory that broke a tie with the Griffins for first place in the North Division and snapped Grand Rapids’ nine-game point streak on home ice (7-0-2-0). The Griffins have now dropped out of first place by 2 points and will have to win the next couple of games on the road in order to regain their first place status.

New Media Driver’s License

Michigan State University has teamed-up with Walsh College to present a new class called New Media Driver’s License. Students in the class will learn how to blog and use Facebook in order to teach people about a cause they are interested in. I think this is a great way for students to interactivly learn about Internet media. Hands on experiences are crucial to the expansion of a students learning experience.
